Chemistry 10 A Test

Chapter 1

TermDefinition
States of Matter Solid, Liquid, Gas
Variable of gas -Temp(speed) -Pressure(collisions) -Volume(size of container) -Amount(# of particles)
Phase changes Solid can be melted to a liquid, a liquid ca be boil and evaporate to a gas. Gas can create condensation. Where liquids can be back to its original form by being frozen.
Physical and Chemical Changes Chemical change- Change of a substance, burn, baking, rust. Hard to change back Physical Change- Change in an objects appearance. melt, freeze, boil
Physical and Chemical properties Physical- Density, magnetic, chemicals Chemical- iodine, H20, flavorable, toxic
Graphing Skills -Title -Labeled Axis -Units -Proper Spacing -Consistent Interval/ ranges on each axis -Independent variable on the x axis -key
Types of graphs Proportional Direct Inverse/indirect
Endothermic Process Adds heat
Exothermic Process Release Heat
Pressure PSI, atom, kpa, torr, hg
Volume L, ML, gallon, cm3 Size of something
Chemistry The study of matter and the changes of matter undergo
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space, useful for recognizing change.
Density closeness of dots
Mass means more dots
Element Simplest form of matter oxygen, iron, gold, carbon
Compound A substance made of 2 or more elements that are chemically combined sugar, salt, baking soda, h2o
Pure Substance Made of only one type of material iron, oxygen, sugar, salt
heterogenous mixtures A type of mixture that is uniform the composition. A mixture that has chunks.
Mixtures A physical blend of 2 or more substances salad, soup, Gatorade, blood
How to separate mixtures Take advantage of different physical properties Magnetic, color, solubility, boiling point
Filtration A technique to separate a mixture based on state of matter, size or other property by passing a sample through a barrier that collects parts of the mixture
Chromotography A technique to separate a mixture by allowing a liquid sample to slowly flow up a porous sheet of paper.
Distillation A technique to separate a mixture based on boiling point or solubility with a complex system of glass using vaporization and condensation
Centrifuge A technique to separate a mixture based on density by spinning it really fast, centrifugal force.
Crystillization A technique to separate a mixture of solution. It lets the water or solute evaporate away leaving the dissolved particle to turn into a solid.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
