1. Social Security Act a law requiring workers and employers to pay a tax; the money provides a monthly pension for retired people.
1. Unemployment Insurance payments by the government for a limited period of time to people who have lost their jobs.
2. Summarize the economic plan of Huey Long. Long's "share our wealth plan" called for taxing the rich heavily and using that money to give every American a home and $2,500 a year.
3. What was the aim of social security and exactly whom did it help? Social Security was supposed to help retired people by providing a monthly pension for retired people and helping people with disabilities or children of parents who could not support them with money.
4. Why did many business leaders oppose Roosevelt's New Deal? Business leaders were against Roosevelt and his New Deal because it was costing more in taxes and destroying free enterprise.
5. Why did Roosevelt propose to change the number of justices on the Supreme Court? List one cause and two effects of FDR's proposal. One cause of Roosevelt changing the number of justices was prevent the Supreme Court from getting rid of the New Deal. Opposition to FDR's proposal accused him of packing the court with his men, and
the Supreme Court passed two bills, Wagner Act and Social Security Act, which actually supported the New Deal.
6. Review the cartoon packing the court on p. 745. Does the cartoon show support for or opposition to the plan? How can you tell? The cartoon shows opposition to the plan because it seems that the representations of the New Deal programs are being thrown at FDR.
