U1 Terms and Definitions

TermDefinition
Individuals Objects described by a set of data
Variables Any characteristic of an individual
Quantitative Variables Characteristics measured numerically
Categorical Variables Characteristics measured in types or categories
Distribution The values the variable takes for each individual and how often they occur
Frequency Table Lists the variables and the number of occurrences, represents distribution
Relative Frequency Table Uses percentages or proportions instead of specific counts, showing the counts relative to the total
Pie Charts Best used for categorical data, shows parts of a whole and only shows relative frequency
Bar Graphs Best used for categorical data, but can show frequency or relative frequency
Area Principle Areas and heights of bar graph bars should be proportional to the data
Two Way Table A table showing two categorical values and comparing them
Marginal Distributions Distribution of values for one categorical variable, percentages across a specific category
Conditional Distributions Values of a variable among a group who share a specific value of another variable
