| anarchist | a person who wants no leader or believes that all forms of government are bad because they interfere with individual liberty; one who engages in activities to destroy all forms of government |
| archaeology | the scientific study of ancient peoples and their cultures, including excavations to retrieve tools, implements, and other artifacts |
| archaism | an archaic word, phrase, or expression, as "goal" for "jail;" any behavior or practice long out of date, as the costumes worn by the Amish in Pennsylvania |
| archenemy | the chief or principal enemy; traditionally, the devil or Satan; the most substantial foe |
| archetype | an original (first) or ancient model or pattern from which later copies are made or occur; a perfect example of a type or group |
| archives | records, often public, of an organization that goes back to its beginning; the building that houses such records |
| hierarchy | the layered system of rule in organization; graded ranks of authority or the people; the group that exercises such authority |
| oligarchy | a form of government in which the power to rule is confined to a few people; the group that exercises such authority |
| patriarch | the father who is ruler of the family or tribe; the founder of something, as a business, colony, or religion |
| sinecure | literally, a position without care, and thus a comfortable job requiring little work or responsibility |
