| desolate | without inhabitants or visitors; deserted or abandoned; to lay waste or deprive inhabitants; to forsake or abandon |
| provoke | to call forth, as anger, irritation, or excitement; to annoy or stir up |
| solarium | a room, often glass-enclosed, that offers maximum exposure to the sun, as where people rest when treated for an illness |
| solarize | to expose, or overexpose, to sunlight; to convert the heating and cooling system of a house or building to sun power |
| soliloquy | the act of speaking to oneself; lines in a play spoken inwardly by a character rather than to other characters |
| solitaire | originally, a hermit or recluse; a single gem, as a diamond, set by itself; a card game played by one person |
| solitary | without companions; alone; lonely, single |
| solitude | the state of being alone, but not necessarily lonely; an isolated place |
| solstice | the time of year when the sun is either farthest north or south of the equator, resulting in the longest or shortest day of the year; literally means "sun stands still," as the sun seems to occupy almost the same spot in the noon sky for several days |
| vociferous | literally, carrying a loud voice, and thus noisy, vehement, or clamorous |
