Computer vocabulary

TermDefinition
Hardware. Hardware is the physical part of the computer.
Software. Software are the instructions inserted into the hardware.
Computer. A computer is an electronic device that manipulates data.
Peripheral. Peripheral is another name for components. A peripheral could be a camera, microphone, USB cards, monitors, speakers, mice, controllers, keyboards, and headphones.
Motherboard. The foundation and circuit board of the computer; it connects all other components/peripherals in the computer.
CPU. CPU is a primary component/peripheral that processes instructions, runs the operating software and other application. Constantly receives user or software input. Advanced CPU's can have more than 1 chip to process; I.e dual core processor.
Heat sink. A piece of metal that sits on top of the CPU. It draws heat away from the CPU so it doesn't overheat.
RAM. RAM, also known as the random access memory, Is the short term memory of the computer. It allows the computer to process tasks that need to be completed fast. It also allows you to access multiple programs quickly and at once. Ram is cleared when done.
Hard drive. The long -term memory of the computer. It stores all of your files and data, even after computer is shut off. The more bigger the capacity, the more files you can store.
Expansion slots. Expansion slots are a connection/port on the motherboard where you can add more hardware. Often fiat video cards, graphic cards, wireless cards, and RAM.
Graphics cards. Graphics cards create the picture that you see on your screen. They can be upgraded for higher quality.
Wireless card. Wireless cards allow the computer to connect to wireless network.
Power supply. Provides the electricity to all computer components/peripherals. It connects power from an outlet to a computer.
Modems and Routers. Modems are modern-translates incoming analog signals into the internet signals for the computer. A router allows user multiple devices to the internet and share the devices like printers. Modems translate and Routers split.
Ethernet Cable/Cat5. An Ethernet Cable is used to connects a device to a router or modem.
VGA Cable. A VGA Cable connects a monitor to a computer. Many newer devices have moved away from VGA and uses HDMI instead.
Keyboard. A keyboard is an input device; user inputs information into the computer by allowing information to be typed into a computer.
Mouse. A mouse is an input device; User inputs information into the computer by allowing clicking, dragging, and selecting.
