| implied theme | author gradually reveals the theme through variety of literary elements |
| protagonist | central character around whom the central conflict revolves |
| antagonist | the character who opposes the protagonist |
| minor characters | those who help or observe the proganist as he or she solves the conflict |
| round character | complex characters that have multiple, sometimes contradictory traits, like real people |
| flat character | show only one or two personality traits |
| dynamic character | develops or changes over the course of the story |
| static | does not undergo any change |
| symbolism | a concrete object that represents an abstract idea |
| concrete | real physical objects; specific; can be seen or touched (tangible) |
| abstract | general ideas or qualities; not specific; cannot be seen or touched |
| narrator | the person who tells the story |
| unreliable narrator | does not tell the story accurately |
| First person | the narrator is a character in the story: referred to as "I" |
| Third Person Omnicient | narrator is not a character in the story and uses the words "he" or "she" to describe the events of the story |
| Third Person Limited | the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of only one character, usually the protagonist |
