6th Grade, Unit 1 Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| absolute value (magnitude) | the distance a number is from zero on a number line; always positive |
| composite number | a whole number greater than 1 that has more than two factors |
| coordinate plane | a way of plotting locations in a 2-dimensional space using a horizontal number line and a vertical number line |
| Distributive Property | a property indicating a special way in which multiplication is applied to addition of two or more numbers in which each term inside a set of parentheses can be multiplied by a factor outside the parentheses, such as 4(6 + 8) = (4x6) + (4x8) |
| factor | a whole number that is multiplied by another whole number to find a product |
| greater than | used to compare two numbers when the first number is larger than the second number |
| greatest common factor | the highest number that divides exactly into two or more numbers |
| inequality | shows numbers in the correct order using the comparing symbols < or > |
| integers | the set of whole numbers (includes zero) and their opposites |
| least common multiple | the lowest whole number that can be divided by two or more chosen numbers |
| less than | used to compare two numbers when the first number is smaller than the second number |
| multiple | the result of multiplying two whole numbers |
| negative numbers | numbers less than zero |
| opposites | two numbers that have the same absolute value but have different signs |
| ordered pair/coordinates | (x,y); shows the location of a point using its location on the horizontal number line, x, and its location on the vertical number line, y |
| origin | the intersection of the zero on the x-axis and zero on the y-axis; (0, 0) |
| positive numbers | numbers greater than zero |
| prime number | a whole number greater than 1 that has exactly two factors, 1 and itself |
| quadrants | four regions into which a coordinate plane is divided by the x-axis and the y-axis |
| rational numbers | any number that can be written as a fraction |
| whole number | a number without a decimal, fraction, or negative |
| x-axis | the horizontal (side-to-side) number line in a coordinate grid/system/plane |
| x-coordinate | the first number of an ordered pair; it tells where on the horizontal axis a point is located |
| y-axis | the vertical (up and down) number line in a coordinate plane/grid/system |
| y-coordinate | the second number of an ordered pair; tells where on the vertical axis a point is located |
