TermDefinition
Inference (n), infer (v): a conclusion reached on the basis of text evidence and reasoning.
Gist (n): a tiny summary that captures the main points of a section of text, less than a sentence.
Claim (n): a statement of truth (in response to a writing prompt) based on one’s analysis of evidence. It can be debated.
Tribal (n): relating to a group or community with similar ancestors, customs and traditions.
Refugee (n): a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, death, persecution, or natural disaster.
Culture (n): the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or social group.
Analysis (n), analyze (v): a combination of your inferences and explanations of the evidence you have chosen to make a claim.
Resilience (n): the ability to recover or “bounce back” from difficulties/challenges; “toughness”.
Characterization (n): a description of the defining features (physical or personality traits) of a character in a text.
Rebel (n): a person who rises in opposition or armed resistance against an established government or ruler.
