| theme | universal idea or common thread incorporated through a piece of work |
| tone | authors attitude towards a subject |
| mood | the way the reader feels as a result of the atmosphere created by a piece of work |
| symbolism | an object, character, figure or color that is used to represent an abstract idea or concept |
| situational irony | when the opposite of what is expected occurs |
| dramatic irony | when the situation is understood by the audience but not all the characters in the piece of work |
| foil characters | a character who highlights the qualities of another character because of their contrasts |
| anecdote | a very short story in a long story |
| allusion | a brief reference to an outside source |
| foreshadowing | a small hint, warning or indication of a future event |
| conflict | a mismatch between two characters man vs man man vs self man vs nature man vs society |
| simile | indirect comparison of two very different things with another thing of a different kind |
| metaphor | word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literallt applicable. direct comparison between two unlike things |
