Poetry Terms TWO

QuestionAnswer
Ballad A poem that tells a stroy similar to folk tale of legend and often has a repeated refrain.
Blank Verse Poetry that is written in unrhymed iambic pentameter.
Canto one of the main of larger divisons of a longpoem. It is also used to denot a singing or chanting section of a peom, or subdivison of an epic or narrative. (Establish or reference a point in time)
Dramatic Poetry Poem written entirely in dialogue. (conatains drama)
Epic A long serious poem that tells the stroy of a herioc figure.
Free verse Poetry composed of either ehymed of unrhymed lines that have no set meter.
Irony Saying one thing and meaning the other.3 types verbal dramatic and situational.
Iambi Pentameter A type of meter in poetry in which ther are five iambs to aline.10 syllables per line.
Narrative Poetry Telling a story.Ex ballads epics and lays.
Onomatopoeia A figure of speech in which words are used to imitate sounds.Ex buzz & hiss
Poetic License A liberty taken by a writer to produce a desired effect by deviating from conventional form, established rule,fact, or logic.
Slant Rhyme A distinctive system or pattern of metrical structure and verse composition in which two words have only their final consonant sounds and no preceding vowel or consonant sounds in commone. LOOKS LIKE IT RHYMES BUT DOES NOT.
Stanze Two or more lines of poetry that together form one of the divisions of a poem.
Theme The main idea or basic meaning of a lit. work.q
Haiku Rhyme of 5,7,5. About nature, origin in japan.
Imagery All the sense are helped, lang. appears to the sense.
Couplet Back to back rhyming lines
Figurtive Language using fiugres of speech to poeticly convey meaning.ex comparsion.
