Literary Elements: Plot

TermDefinition
Plot Sequence of events in a work of literature.
Exposition The part of the plot in which the reader is given important background information about the characters and setting.
Inciting Incident The first event that sets the plot in motion and introduces the conflict.
Conflict (External) The problem or struggle between opposing forces - exists between a character and an outside force.
Conflict (Internal) The problem or struggle between opposing forces - exists within the mind of a character, such as when one has to make a difficult decision or is dealing with a personal problem.
