TermDefinition
key ideas important ideas throughout a work that support the central message, theme, tone, etc.
organizational pattern the pattern an author constructs as he or she organizes his or her ideas and provides supporting details. Examples of commonly used patterns are cause and effect, problem and solution, description, compare/contrast, and sequence.
cause and effect The text describes an event (cause) and the effects that follow.
description The text provides details or characteristics of a topic.
sequence The text outlines chronological events or a list of steps in a procedure.
compare and contrast The text gives similarities and differences over more than one topic.
revising a stage in the writing process when a text is examined and changes are made to improve the focus, content, organization, sentence structure, and word choice.
transitional words/phrases words or phrases that link sentences and paragraphs together smoothly so that there are no abrupt jumps or breaks between ideas.
graphic feature picture or other image within a text
