Which compromise directly impacted the establishment of a two-house legislature in the U.S. Constitution? The Connecticut Compromise wanted to represent based on states population.
Name the political leaders that contributed significantly to the framing of the U.S. Constitution. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, James Madison.
Describe the federal government created by the Constitution? the 3 branches of government! They created the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches. Legislative branch consists of the Senate of House Representatives, executive branch is the president, judicial branch is the Supreme Court.
Explain the concept of limited government? There were many restrictions to protect the rights of individual citizens. The government is limited by laws and through the separation of powers. This keeps the government from abusing its power.
Describe the viewpoint of Anti-Federalists regarding the ratification of the proposed Constitution? They were opposed to the ratification of the constitution. They thought it gave to much power to the central government.
What idea did the Magna Carta establish? The power of government, even kings, can be limited.
Explain the social contract? Agreement to give up SOME freedom in order to have rights protected! The people agree to have their rights limited by the government in exchange for the government agreeing to protect their rights.
How are individual rights protected in a limited government? The government has to follow the law, it is difficult or the government to abuse its power by limiting the rights of the citizens.
Which issues caused the most debate during the writing of the Constitution? What compromises resolved each issue? Connecticut Compromise; How to determine representation in the Legislative Branch. ⅗ compromise; do enslaved persons count as population. Commerce and Slave Trade Compromise; the national government regulates trade, including the slave trade.
Explain how the Federalist Papers supported the ratification of the Constitution. James Madison and Alexander Hamilton were supporters of the Constitution. They explained aspects of the document and why they were important to the government. Available to the public to help understand different provisions of the constitution.
What are the unalienable rights? Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.Rights that we are born with that cannot be limited or taken away property rights.
Which other rights may be considered to be "unalienable"? Freedom of Speech, religion, Men are created equal.
Explain the Anti-Federalist view of the Constitution? They were against having a new constitution. They were opposed to the ratifying the constitution without the inclusion of the Bill of Rights.
What does bicameral mean? A type of legislature that has two branches or chambers, in which all members intentionally vote as a single group. Bicameral Congress comes from the Connecticut Compromise it was made to ensure that a government could be created.
Explain the bicameral structure of Congress. Congress had a bicameral legislature and they composed of 2 separate houses. Congress consists of the Senate and House of Representatives. They also considered a unicameral, or 1 house legislature.
Why did the Founding Fathers agree to make Congress bicameral? They had considered dividing powers between the Framers.
Describe the government under the Articles of Confederation. What were some of the weaknesses? A weak central government that consisted of the Confederation Congress. No executive branch or judicial branch. States retained most of the power. The central government never had any money and could not enforce their laws.
Compare and contrast the Virginia Plan of government and the New Jersey Plan of government. Virginia Plan called for government with 3 branches, legislative consisted a 2 house Congress with representation on population, executive branch/judicial branch. New Jersey Plan also created a 3 branch government but with a unicameral congress.
What elements of each plan were included in the Constitution?- included the 3 branches of government, 2 house Congress that has 1 house vote by population and the other has 1 house for every state has 1 vote.
unicameral A type of legislature that has a single legislative chamber, which consists of one house or assembly.
Delegates An authorized person who is sent to a conference to represent others. Represent a group of people in the political assembly of the U.S.
ratification The action of giving formal consent and to make a valid/effective consent to a treaty, contract, or agreement
Framers A person who creates concepts, plans, or systems.
