simile comparison using 'like' or 'as'
metaphor direct comparisons that are not literally applicable
symbolism something that suggests a deeper meaning meant to evoke a emotional response
theme an idea that recurs in or pervades a work of art or literature
cosmic irony when fate is controlled by outside forces
dramatic irony the audience knows what the characters do not
verbal saying the opposite of what one means
situational irony an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects
point of view the perspective from which the story is told
first person a story in which the narrator uses the pronoun "I"
omniscient a story in which the narrator is all-knowing
third-person limited a story in which the narrator chooses not to reveal any of the character's thoughts
allusion a reference to history, Bible, literature, or mythology
tone a writer's attitude towards the characters or subject matter of his/her story
flashback references to something that has previously happened
foreshadowing a warning sign of a future event
personification lending a non-human object the characteristics of a human
conflict the obstacle or challenge that the main character faces
