| protagonist | the main character that the story follows |
| antagonist | a person who actively opposes or is hostile towards the protagonist |
| static | a character that does not change mentally or physically |
| dynamic | a character that changes mentally and physically |
| imagery | using figurative language to represent objects, actions, and ideas to appeal to our senses |
| simile | comparison using 'like' or 'as' |
| metaphor | direct comparisons that are not literally applicable |
| symbolism | something that suggests a deeper meaning meant to evoke a emotional response |
| theme | an idea that recurs in or pervades a work of art or literature |
| cosmic irony | when fate is controlled by outside forces |
| dramatic irony | the audience knows what the characters do not |
| verbal | saying the opposite of what one means |
| situational irony | an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects |
| point of view | the perspective from which the story is told |
| first person | a story in which the narrator uses the pronoun "I" |
| omniscient | a story in which the narrator is all-knowing |
| third-person limited | a story in which the narrator chooses not to reveal any of the character's thoughts |
| allusion | a reference to history, Bible, literature, or mythology |
| tone | a writer's attitude towards the characters or subject matter of his/her story |
| flashback | references to something that has previously happened |
| foreshadowing | a warning sign of a future event |
| personification | lending a non-human object the characteristics of a human |
| conflict | the obstacle or challenge that the main character faces |

| man vs nature | against the elements |
| man vs society | against a social concept |
| man vs man | humans against each other |
