Compound | a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
Element | a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means |
Mixture | a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined |
Homogeneous | all the particles in a mixture appear to be the same throughout |
Heterogeneous | all the particles in a mixture appear different |
Atom | the smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element |
Molecule | two or more atoms chemically joined together |
Physical Property | a characteristic of a substance that does not invlove a chemical change, such as density, color, or hardness |
Physical Change | a change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties |
Chemical Property | a property of matter that describes a substance's ability to participate in chemical reactions |
Chemical Change | a change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties |
Phase Change | a physical change of matter from one form to another |
Melting Point | the temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid |
Boiling Point | the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas |
Condensation | the change of state from a gas to a liquid |
Sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas |
Freezing Point | the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid |
Mass | a measure of the amount of matter in an object |
Volume | a measure of the amount of space an object takes up |
Density | the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance |
