Chemistry Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Compound a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds
Element a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means
Mixture a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
Homogeneous all the particles in a mixture appear to be the same throughout
Heterogeneous all the particles in a mixture appear different
Atom the smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element
Molecule two or more atoms chemically joined together
Physical Property a characteristic of a substance that does not invlove a chemical change, such as density, color, or hardness
Physical Change a change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties
Chemical Property a property of matter that describes a substance's ability to participate in chemical reactions
Chemical Change a change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties
Phase Change a physical change of matter from one form to another
Melting Point the temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid
Boiling Point the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas
Condensation the change of state from a gas to a liquid
Sublimation the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas
Freezing Point the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid
Mass a measure of the amount of matter in an object
Volume a measure of the amount of space an object takes up
Density the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance
