| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| atom | is the smallest quantity of matter that still retains the properties of matter |
| element | is a substance that cannot be broken down into two or more simpler substances by any means Ex: gold, oxygen, helium |
| law of Conservation of Mass | what ever mass goes in, must come out; there is no detectable change in mass during an ordinary chemical reaction |
| Law of Constant Composition/ Law of definite proportion | one chemical sample will be the same as another chemical sample; a chemical compound always contains the same elements in the same proportions by mass; |
| Law of Multiple Proportions | when 2 elements react to form more than one compound, the weights of the elements will always balance out to equal a ratio of small, whole numbers |
| radiation | the emission and transmission of energy in the form of waves |
| cathode ray tube | two metal plates sealed inside a glass tube from which most of the air has been evacuated |
| electrons | negatively charged particles |
| protons | positively charged particles found in the nucleus |
| neutrons | slightly larger than protons; electronically neutral particles found in the nucleus |
| electrons | negatively charged particles distributed around the nucleus |
| atomic number (Z) | number of protons in the nucleus |
| mass number (A) | the total number of protons and neutrons; a.k.a. nucleons |
| isotopes | ATOMS OF THE SAME ELEMENT=identical number of p+ (protons); different number of neutrons |
| cation | electrons removed; more PROTONS |
| anion | electrons added; more ELECTRONS |
