archetype plots and characters that reoccur across multiple texts
exposition introduction to the story
rising action building action of the story that leads up to the climax
climax the turning point of the story
falling action the movement to the resolution
resolution the ending to the story
what order does the plot structure go? exposition, inciting action, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution
foreshadowing an indication of a future event
verbal irony when a character says the opposite of what is meant
inciting action initiates the action in the story
situational irony when the opposite of what is expected happens
dramatic irony when the reader is aware of something that the characters aren't
direct characterization the author directly describes a character
indirect characterization the character is revealed through their personality, words, appearance, words, actions, and effects on others
1st person point of view the narrator is also a character in the story ( we, us, I, me)
2nd person point of view the narrator refers to the reader in the story (you)
3rd person omniscient the narrator talks in 3rd person (they, he, she) and is all knowing
3rd person limited the narrator talks in 3rd person (they,he,she) but only knows the thoughts and feeling of 1 character
protagonist the main character
antagonist a character in conflict with the main character
round character complex character
flat character a stereotypical character
static character a character that does not change through the story
dynamic character a character that changes throughout the story
character foils 2 characters that are the opposite of each other
main idea a summary of what the story is mainly about
moral the lesson of the story
topic the subject in the story
theme the central message in the story
social commentary writing that offers insight into society and it's values and customs.
imitation applying traditional genre characteristics in the story
adaptation changing genre characteristics for some effect
mockery uses traditional genre characteristics for the purpose of making fun of them
what are some elements of mythology? short stories, gods and goddesses, origin stories, no "happy" ending
how are genre elements used in imitation? traditional genre characteristics are incorporated into the story
what are some elements of fables? very short stories, characters are animals, moral is clearly stated, story is simple and not complex
what are some elements of fairy tales? 3rd person omniscient, settings are far away in the past, happy endings, archetypes
how are genre elements used in adaptation? traditional genre characteristics are changed for a meaningful effect
what is a genre? a group of texts with similar forms, patterns,and/or subject matter
how are genre elements used in mockery? the genres characteristics are mocked in the story
