| Anaphora | a repetition of words or phrases at the beginning of consecutive lines or sentences e.x. "...we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills..." |
| Asyndeton | a syntactical structure in which conjunctions are omitted in a series, usually producing more rapid prose e.x. "Consciousness of place came ebbing back to him slowly over a vast tract of time unlit, unfelt, unlived..." |
| Cliche' | an overused phrase e.x. "Last but not least" |
| Colloquialism | informal words or expressions not usually acceptable in formal writing e.x. "I'm fixin' to go to the park" "Am I excited for the party? You betcha!" |
| Euphamism | an indirect, less offensive way of saying something considered unpleasant e.x. Referring to death as "passing away" or "kicking the bucket" |
| Idiom | an expression in a given language that cannot be understood from the literal meaning of the words in the expression; can be a part of regional speech or dialect e.x. jump the gun (meaning to start too soon) |
| Parenthetical | comment that interrupts the immediate subject, often to qualify or explain e.x. Cobras, although they are essentially moody, like an occasional chuckle. |
| Epiphany | a moment of sudden revelation or insight e.x. In Portrait of the Artist... Stephen Dedalus sees a young girl at the beach and is overcome by the realization that beauty is crucial to human life. |
| Foil | a character whose traits deliberately contrast with another character's traits in order to highlight those differences e.x. Woody and Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story |
| Anachronism | something out of time and place in a literary work e.x. Brutus and Cassius discuss a clock in Julius Caesar, which is a good example because there were no mechanical clocks during Caesar's time. |
