appliqué noun: a decorative design made of one material sewn over another Samantha was excited to see the appliqué on her new hoodie.
dearth noun: a scarcity or lack of something There's a real dearth in knowledge about how to manage money.
abrade verb: rub hard or scrub, wear away To prepare wood, lightly abrade the surface using a dry sandpaper, rubbing in the direction of the grain.
facetious adjective: joking or jesting often inappropriately; inappropriately clever or amusing in tone He made a facetious and tasteless remark about people in famine-stricken countries being spared the problem of overeating.
extemporize verb: perform without preparation Many students tend to extemporize when it comes to exams, such as the ACT or SAT.
