Basics of Geometry
Term | Definition |
---|---|
A single location in space with no length, width, or height (zero dimensional). | Point |
A collection of connected points that has no thickness and extends forever in two opposite directions. | Line |
A collection of points along a line that has a starting point and extends forever in only one direction. | Ray |
A collection of points along a line that has a starting point and an ending point. | Line Segment |
A geometric object formed by two rays with a shared starting point. | Angle |
A point where two lines or rays meet. | Vertex |
An angle that measures exactly 90 degrees. | Right Angle |
An angle that measures between 0 and 90 degrees. | Acute Angle |
Measures between 90 and 180 degrees. | Obtuse Angle |
Measures exactly 180 degrees. | Straight Angle |
Angle measures add to 360 degrees. | Angles around a point. |
Share a common ray. (“Side by side” or “next to”). | Adjacent Angles |
Two angles whose measures add to 90 degrees. | Complementary Angles |
Two angles whose measures add to 180 degrees. | Supplementary Angles |
Opposite angles formed by intersecting lines. These angles have equal measurements. | Vertical Angles |
Bisects a segment into two congruent segments. | Midpoint |
A line, ray, or segment that passes through the midpoint of a segment forming right angles. | Perpendicular Bisector |
