Basics of Geometry

TermDefinition
A single location in space with no length, width, or height (zero dimensional). Point
A collection of connected points that has no thickness and extends forever in two opposite directions. Line
A collection of points along a line that has a starting point and extends forever in only one direction. Ray
A collection of points along a line that has a starting point and an ending point. Line Segment
A geometric object formed by two rays with a shared starting point. Angle
A point where two lines or rays meet. Vertex
An angle that measures exactly 90 degrees. Right Angle
An angle that measures between 0 and 90 degrees. Acute Angle
Measures between 90 and 180 degrees. Obtuse Angle
Measures exactly 180 degrees. Straight Angle
Angle measures add to 360 degrees. Angles around a point.
Share a common ray. (“Side by side” or “next to”). Adjacent Angles
Two angles whose measures add to 90 degrees. Complementary Angles
Two angles whose measures add to 180 degrees. Supplementary Angles
Opposite angles formed by intersecting lines. These angles have equal measurements. Vertical Angles
Bisects a segment into two congruent segments. Midpoint
A line, ray, or segment that passes through the midpoint of a segment forming right angles. Perpendicular Bisector
