AP Human Geography

Unit 2: Population

TermDefinition
Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) A figure that describes the number of babies that die within the first year of their lives in a given population
Child Mortality Rate (CMR) A figure that describes the number of children that die between the first and fith years of thier lives in a given population
Life Expectancy A figure indicating how long, on average, a person may be expected to live. Normally expressed in the context of a particular state
Total Fertility Rate (TFR) The average number of children born to a women during her child bearing years
Natural Increase Rate (NIR/RNI) The birth rate - death rate of a population; a statistic used to measure the growth of population in a region, exclusive of immigration and emigration
Birth Rates The number of live births per 1,000 population in a given year
Death Rates The number of deaths per 1,000 population in a given year
arithmetic density Divides the entire population of a country by the total land area to come up with a population density for the country as a whole
Physiological Density The number of people per unit area of arable land
Agricultural Density Total number of farmers per unit of arable land
Carrying capacity The ability of the land to sustain a certain number of people
Ecumene inhabited land, where people live
Population Pyramid represents the breakdown of the population by gender and age at a given point of time
demographic relating to the structure of populations, characteristics of a population
Mortality state of being mortal, subject to death
Migration a change in residence from region or countries, intended to be permanent
Population doubling time the time it takes for a population to double in size/value
