Tenth list of 15 words for the 1st semester of AP Lang and Comp

TermConnotation
Recant negative, and quite often in terms of regret. To withdraw previous statements to which one has previously committed oneself.
Culpable negative, used to describe bad people who do bad things. Feature of crime. Deserving blame as being wrong, evil, improper or injurious
Abrogate used neutrally to describe the disbandment of laws or the death of something. Can be negative. To abolish, to do away with or annul especially by authority
Winnow neutral, often referring to filtering grain or groups of people.
Colloquial refers to slang of conversational versions of other words.
Epithet often negative and used as slurs of insults. A term, sometimes of an abusive nature used to characterize a person or thing.
Interloper a person who is in a profession or social circle where they don't belong
Prolific refers to a plant that produces a lot of fruit or vegetation. Also professionals who produce a lot of their work.
Yeoman usually refers to a lower class freeholder who cultivates their own land. Can also be someone who does a lot of the labor.
Obfuscate used to describe something unclear, obscure or unintelligible to break someone.
Contrition used to describe the negative state, generally pertains to someone feeling sorry about something,
Antebellum very specific, used in reference to the time period before the Civil War first known to mean above. Often used to describe the granger of the South truing its back on slavery.
Acerbic negative. Someone who always says things how they are. Sometimes the hard truth. Acid or biting in taste, tone or manner.
Hegemony dominant position or political or cultural dominance. Both negative and positive
Mellifluous used for talking about sounds that are sweet and flow. Positive.
