| Pure Substance | The same type of substance throughout |
| Mixture | Multiple substances mixed together |
| Element | A pure substance made of one kind of atom |
| Compound | A pure substance made of multiple elements joined by chemical bonds |
| Homogeneous | A mixture that is uniform throughout |
| Heterogeneous | A mixture that is not uniform throughout |
| Precipitate | An insoluble solid that forms from a liquid |
| Physical Property | An aspect that can be observed without changing matter |
| Physical Change | A change in matter where the substance itself stays the same |
| Chemical Property | An aspect that is observed by changing matter |
| Chemical Change | A change in matter that changes the identity of the substance |
| Decantation | Pouring off a liquid after the solid settles at the bottom |
| Filtration | Separating a solid from a liquid using filter paper |
| Centrifugation | Separate a solution by density (centrifuge) |
| Distillation | Separate a solution by boiling points |
| Chromatography | Separate a solution by the rate at which its compounds are absorbed (think: ink being absorbed by paper towel) |

| Effervescent | Giving off bubbles (think: alka seltzer) |
| Extrinsic | Measuring to determine the amount of something (volume, length, etc) (think: EXtend a measuring tape) |
| Intrisic | Determine qualities using 5 senses, does not depend on the amount of matter (color, flammability, etc) |
| Endothermic | Absorbs heat |
| Exothermic | Gives off heat |
