How is psychology a science? Psychology uses the tools of science to describe, explain, predict, and control behavior and mental processes.
What is the difference between structuralism and functionalism? structuralism focuses on the different parts of the brain, functionalism focuses on how consciousness changes in an environment
Why is the "rat always right"? -Facts speak for themselves -Researchers have to accept the results of the study even if the hypothesis has been proven wrong.
What are three key elements of the scientific attitude? curiosity, skepticism, and humility
What did Socrates and Plato believe? mind and body are separate, mind continues after death, knowledge is innate
What did Aristotle believe? knowledge is experienced and mind and body are one (monism)
What did René Descartes believe? -agreed with Socrates and Plato -dissected animals -fluid in brain flows through nerves to muscles causing movement
What did Francis Bacon believe? -founder of modern science -empiricism
What did John Locke believe? -tabula rasa -the mind at birth is a blank slate on which experience writes
What is tabula rasa? blank slate at birth
What is empiricism? the theory that all knowledge is derived from sense-experience (observation, experience)
How did Wilhelm Wundt influence psychology's early development? established the first psychology lab wanted to measure the "atoms of the mind" ... the fastest mental processes
What did Wundt experiment? In two separate trials, subjects were asked to press a telegraph key as soon as... -they heard the sound of a ball hitting a platform -they were consciously aware of perceiving the sound
What were the results of Wundt's experiment? -In the first trial the subjects pressed the button in 1/10th of a second when they heard the sound of a ball hitting a platform -But it took 2/10th of a second to wait until they were consciously aware of perceiving the sound
How did Edward Bradford Titchener influence psychology's early development? Edward Bradford Titchener introduced structuralism to study the elements of the mind, used introspection
What is structuralism? an early school of psychology that used introspection to explore the structural elements of the human mind
What is introspection? the examination of one's own conscious thoughts and feelings
How did Charles Darwin influence psychology's early development? -natural selection of mental and physical traits -adaptive evolution -influenced William James
How did William James influence psychology's early development? -introduced functionalism -wrote Principles of Psychology
What is functionalism? the theory that all aspects of a society serve a function and are necessary for the survival of that society.
How did Mary Whiton Calkins influence psychology's early development? -student of William James -denied her Ph.D. due to gender -memory researcher -first female president of the APA
How did Margaret Floy Washburn influence psychology's early development? - student of Edward Titchener - first female to earn Ph.D.in psychology - wrote The Animal Mind
Who influenced psychology's important milestones? Wilhelm Wundt, Edward Bradford Titchener, Charles Darwin, William James, Mary Whiton Calkins, Margaret Floy Washburn

How did behaviorism further the development of psychological science? Behaviorists focused on studying outward behavior was considered more scientific. This helped psychology to become more established as a science.

What is behaviorism? the view that psychology should be an objective science that studies behavior without reference to mental processes
How did Freud influence development of psychological science? -developed an influential treatment process called psychoanalysis -personality theory
What is Freudian (or psychoanalytic) psychology? unconscious forces and childhood experiences affect our behavior and mental processes
How did humanism further the development of psychological science? It offered a new approach to understanding human behaviors and motivations and led to developing new techniques and approaches to psychotherapy .
Who created humanism? Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers
What is humanism? The emphasis of on the influence of the humanities on cultures such as literature, philosophy and fine arts. The study of potential and personal growth
