Abhor to hate very much; to detest utterly. *e.x. To abhor insects is to hate them greatly.
Abominate to dislike strongly; to regard with intense aversion or loathing. *e.x. David abominates vegetables and never eats them.
Abridge to shorten; to condense; to diminish; to curtail. *e.x. If you don't have time to read an entire newspaper, there are clipping services to abridge news stories.
Abstruse hard to understand. *e.x. Chemistry is an abstruse subject for many students.
Adjunct something connected or added to another in a subordinate position, an assistant. *e.x. Hang gliding is only adjunct to Rose's real love of skydiving.
Affidavit a sworn written statement. *e.x. The defense lawyer had a sworn affidavit from witnesses claiming his client was innocent of the crime.
Aggrandize to increase in size; enlarge, to cause to appear greater in power, influence. *e.x. To aggrandize his achievements, Richard would make up unbelievable stories of them.
Alleviate to make less severe; to relieve; to lessen. *e.x. When he got a headache, he took an Advil to alleviate the pain.
Allure to entice with something desirable; to tempt *e.x. The actress allured the crowd with her outstanding beauty,
Also-ran one who is defeated in a race, election, or other competition; loser *e.x. Mitt Romney was an also-ran to Barack Obama.
Ambiance mood, feeling; general atmosphere. *e.x. The ambiance of the locker room after the team lost the championship was depressing.
Amendable agreeable, responsible to authority, pleasant, willing to give in to the wishes of another. *e.x. The amendable man helped the old lady with her groceries.
Archaic belonging to an earlier time, ancient; outdated. *e.x. Archaic civilizations are the chief subject of archaeological studies.
Arduous hard, difficult, tiresome. *e.x. Swimming three miles was the most arduous exercise he did.
Assuage (uh-SWAYJ) to soothe; to make less severe; to satisfy, ease, lessen. *e.x. Many athletes drink sports drinks to assuage their thirst.
