MATH VOCAB UNIT 1

TermDefinition
Value the number a digit represents, which is determined by the position of the digit.
Standard form a common way of writing a number with commas separating groups of 3 digits starting from the right: 3,458,901
Expanded form a way to write a number that shows the place value of each digit; 3 x 1,000 + 5 x 100 +6 x 10
Word form a way to write a number using words; seven hundred ten,
Tenths one of 10 equal parts of a whole.
Hundredths one part of 100 equal parts of a whole.
Thousandths one of 1,000 equal parts of a whole.
Equivalent decimals decimals that name the same amount; 0.7 = 0.70
Ascending to increase in size or order.
Descending to decrease in size or order.
Compose numbers To combine smaller place-value blocks/numbers to make larger blocks/numbers; the opposite of “decompose numbers”.
Decompose numbers To break apart larger place-value blocks/numbers to make smaller blocks/numbers; the opposite of “compose numbers”.
Adjacent sides or angles that are next to each other and share a side
Rounding a process that determines which multiple of 10, 100, 1,000, etc. that the number is closest to
Digits the symbols used to show numbers; 0,1,2,3,4,50,100 etc.
Period In a number, a group of three digits, separated by commas, starting from the right.
Whole number place-value the position of whole numbers- ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions, etc.
Whole numbers the numbers 0,1,2,3,4, etc.
Decimal place-value The position of a number to the right or left of the decimal; 23.97
Justify To show or use reasoning to prove your answer.
