| matter | a measure of the amount of matter |
| physical property | a characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing The identity of the substance |
| chemical property | relates to a substances ability to undergo changes that transform it into different substances |
| intensive property | Does not depend on the amount of matter present. (Ex: Temperature, density, color) does not depend on the size or shape of a sample. |
| extensive property | depend on the amount of matter that is present ( Ex: Mass, volume) |
| ductility | the ratio of a substance to the volume of a substance |
| malleability | the ability of a substance to be hammered or beaten into sheet |
| volume | is the amount of space occupied by an object |
| compressibility | the measure of how much a given volume of matter deceases when placed under pressure |
| density | the ratio of mass to volume or mass divided by volume |
| evaporation | a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means |
| sublimation | the process in which a solid change directly into gas |
| vaporization | the process by which a liquid that evaporates readily or at a low temperature |
| element | An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler, stable substances and is made of one type of atom |
| compound | A compound is a substance that can be broken down into simple stable substances |
| heterogeneous mixture | mixtures that are not uniform throughout |
| homogeneous mixture | Mixtures that are uniform in composition and also called solutions |
| atom | An atom is the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical identity of that element |
