molecule a group of atoms bonded together
atoms the building blocks of matter. made up of protons, electrons, and neutrons.
protons positively charged particles in the nucleus of an atom
neutrons neutral particles that don't have an electrical charge in the nucleus of an atom
electrons the negatively charged particles of an atom; found outside the nucleus
elements a molecule composed of one kind of atom; cannot be broken into simpler units by chemical reactions
periodic table of elements a table that classifies elements by their physical and chemical properties; rows are called periods; columns are called groups
groups vertical columns on the periodic table
periods horizontal rows on the periodic table
covalent bond a chemical bond that involves sharing a pair of electrons between atoms in a molecule
ionic bond a chemical bond resulting from the attraction between oppositely charged ions
h2o bond covalent
extended structure a structure formed by repeating groups of atoms that link together in a large network
atomic nucleus an atom's dense central core, containing protons and neutrons
