| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| physical property | characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance |
| chemical property | relates to a substance's ability to undergo changes that transform it into different substances |
| extensive property | depend on the amount of matter that is present |
| intensive property | do not depend on the amount of matter present |
| ductility | the ability of a substance to be hammered thin or drawn out into a wire |
| malleability | the ability of a substance to be hammered or beaten into a sheet |
| volume | a measure of the size of a body or region in three dimensional space |
| compessibility | the meausre of how much a given volume of matter deceases when placed under pressure |
| density | the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance; often expressed as grams per cubic centimeter for solids and liquids and as grams per litter for gasses |
| evaporation | the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas |
| sublimation | the process in which a solid changes direcly into a gas |
| vaporization | the proscess in which a liquid or solid changes into a gas |
| element | a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means; all atoms of an element have the same atomic number |
| compound | a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
| heterogeneous mixture | composed of dissimilar components |
| homogeneous mixture | describes something that has a uniform structure or composition throughout |
| atom | the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of that element |
