Unit 1: Matter

TermDefinition
matter Matter can thus be defined as anything that has mass and takes up space
physical property Physical property is a characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance
Chemical Property Relates to a substance's ability to undergo changes that transform into different substances
Physical changes Examples of physical changes include grinding, cutting , melting and boiling material.
chemical changes The substances that react in a chemical change that are called reactants
extensive property Extensive property depend n the amount of matter that is present
intensive property Intensive properties do not depend on the amount of matter present
compresibility The measure of how much a given volume decreases when placed under pressure
density Density is the ratio to mass to volume, or mass divided by volume
evaporation Evaporation is the process of turning from liquid into vapor.
sublimation The change of state from a solid directly to a gas is known as sublimation
vaporization The amount of energy as heat that is needed to vaporize one mole of liquid's boiling point at constant pressure is called vaporization
element Elements are pure substances that cannot be decomposed
compound A compound is a substance that can be broken into simple stable substances.
heterogeneous Mixture heterogeneous mixture is a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture
homogeneous Mixture homogeneous Mixture a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture
atom An atom is the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical identity of that element.
