matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
physical property | A characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change |
chemical property | A property of matter that describes a substances ability to participate in chemical reactions |
physical changes | A change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties |
chemical changes | A change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties |
extensive property | A property that depends on the extent or size of a system |
intensive property | A property that does not depend on the amount of matter present |
ductility | This ability of a substance to be hammered thin or drawn out into a wire |
malleability | The ability of a substance to be hammered or beaten into a sheet |
volume | A measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space |
compressibility | The measure of how much a given volume of matter decreases when place under pressure |
density | The ration of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance |
evaporation | The change of a substance from a liquid to a gas |
sublimation | The process in which a solid changes directly into a gas |
vaporization | The process by which a liquid or solid changes to a gas |
element | A substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means |
compound | A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
heterogeneous mixture | A mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture. |
homogeneous mixture | A mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout the mixture |
atom | The smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of that element |
