Unit 1: Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Physical Property | A characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density or color |
| Chemical Property | A property of matter that describes a substances ability to participate in chemical reaction |
| Physical Changes | A change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties |
| Chemical Changes | A change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties |
| Extensive Property | A property relating to size or extent |
| Intensive Property | A property that does not depend on the amount of matter present, such as pressure, temp, or density |
| Ductility | The ability of a substance to be hammered thin or drawn out into a wire |
| Malleability | The ability of a substance to be hammered of beaten into a sheet |
| Volume | A measure of the size of the body or region in 3d space |
| Compressibility | The measure of how much a given volume of matter decreases when placed under pressure |
| Density | The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance; often expressed as grams or per cubic centimeter for solid |
| Evaporation | The change of a substance from liquid to gas |
| Sublimination | A solid changing into a gas or reverse |
| Vaporization | Liquid is exchanged into gas |
| Element | A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means: all atoms of an element have the same atomic number |
| Compound | A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
| Heterogenous Mixture | A reaction in which the reactants are in two different phases |
| Homogenous Mixture | A reaction in which all of the reactants and products are in the same phase |
| Atom | The smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of that element |
