Unit 1: Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| physical property | a characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density, color, or hardness |
| chemical property | a property of matter that describes a substances ability to participate in chemical reactions |
| physical changes | a change of matter from one form to another without a change i n chemical properties |
| chemical changes | a change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties |
| extensive property | a property that depends on the extent or size of a system |
| intensive property | a property that does not depend on the amount of matter present, such as pressure, temperature, or density |
| ductility | the ability of a substance to be hammered thin or drawn out into a wire |
| malleability | the ability of a substance to be hammered or beaten into a sheet |
| volume | a measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space |
| compressibility | the measure of how much a given volume of matter decreases when placed under pressure |
| density | the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance; often expressed as grams per cubic centimeter for solids and liquids and as grams per liter for gases |
| evaporation | the change of a substance from a liquid to gas |
| sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas |
| vaporization | the process by which a liquid or solid changes to a gas |
| element | a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means; all atoms of an element have the same atomic number |
| compound | a sub stance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
| heterogeneous mixture | composed of dissimilar compounds |
| homogeneous mixture | describes something that has a uniform structure |
| atom | the smallest unit of an element that maintains chemical properties |
