| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space . |
| physical property | a characteristics of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density, color or hardness. |
| chemical property | a property of matter that describes a substance's ability to participate in chemical reactions |
| physical changes | a change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties . |
| chemical changes | a change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties . |
| extensive property | a property that depends on the extent or size of a system |
| intensive property | a property that does not depend on the amount of matter present,such as pressure ,temperature,or density |
| ductility | the ability of a substance to be hammered thin or draw out into a wire . |
| malleability | the ability of substance to be hammered or beaten into a sheet |
| volume | a measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space |
| compressibility | the measure of how much a given volume decreases when placed under pressure. |
| density | the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance . |
| evaporation | the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas |
| sublimation | the process in which a solid changes diretcly into a gas |
| vaporization | the process by which a liquid or changes to a gas |
| element | a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simple substances . |
| compound | a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
| heterogeneous mixture | composed of dissimilar components |
| homogeneous mixture | describes something that has a uniform structure or composition throughout |
| atom | the smallest unit of and element that maintains the chemical properties of that element |
