Unit 1: Matter
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
Physical Property | A characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density, color, or hardness. |
Chemical Property | A property of matter that describes a substance's ability to participate in chemical reactions. |
Extensive Property | A property that depends on the extent or size of a system. |
Intensive Property | A property that does not depend on the amount of matter present, such as pressure, temperature, or density |
Ductility | Ability to be drawn or or plastically deformed without fracture. |
Malleability | The ability of a substance to be hammered or beaten into a sheet |
Volume | A measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space. |
Compressibility | The ability of something such as a fluid to be reduced into volume or size. |
Density | The ratio of the mass of the substance to the volume of the substance, often expressed as grams per cubic centimeter for solids and liquids and as grams per liter for gases. |
Evaporation | The change of a substance from a liquid to a gas. |
Sublimation | The process in which solid changes directly into a gas ( the term is sometimes also used for the reverse process) |
Vaporization | the process by which a solid or a liquid changes to a gas. |
Element | A substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means ; all atoms of an element have the same atomic number. |
Compound | A substance made up of atoms or two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds. |
Heterogeneous mixture | A mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture. |
Homogeneous mixture | A mixture blended so greatly that you cannot see the mixture. |
Atom | A particle of matter. |
