Unit 1: Matter
Chemistry
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Physical Property | A characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density, color, or hardness |
| Chemical Property | A property of matter that describes a substance's ability to participate in chemical reactions |
| Extensive Property | A property that depends on the extent or size of a system |
| Intensive Property | A property that does not depend on the amount of matter present, such as pressure, temperature, or density |
| Ductility | The ability of a substance to be hammered thin or drawn into a wire |
| Malleability | The ability of a substance to be hammered or beaten into a sheet |
| Volume | A measure of the size of the body or region in three-dimensional space |
| Compressibility | The measure of how much a given volume of matter decreases when placed under pressure. |
| Density | The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance; often expressed as grams per cubic centimeter for solids & liquids & as grams per liter for gases |
| Evaporation | The change of a substance from a liquid to a gas |
| Sublimation | The process in which a solid changes directly into a gas (The term is sometimes also used for the reverse process) |
| Vaporization | The process by which a liquid or solid changes to a gas |
| Element | A substance that can't be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means; all atoms of an element have the same atomic number |
| Compound | A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bounds |
| Heterogeneous | Composed of dissimilar components |
| Homogeneous | Describes something that has a uniform structure or composition throughout |
| Atom | The smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of that element |
| Physical change | A change in the substance that doesn't involve a change in the identity of the substance (A change of the state of matter) from solid to liquid/gas |
| Chemical change | A change in which one or more substances are converted into different substances (Chemical reaction takes place) |
