Unit 1: Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | Matter Can thus be defined as anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Physical Property | A physical property is a characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance |
| Chemical Property | A chemical property relates to a substance's ability to undergo changes that transforms it into different substances |
| Physical Changes | A change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance is called a Physical Change solid to liquid to gas |
| Chemical Changes | A change in which one or more substances are converted Into different substances is called a Chemical Change |
| Extensive Property | Exstensive properties depend on the amountof matter that is present |
| Intensive Property | In contrast Intensive properties do not depend on the amount of matter present |
| Ductillity | The ability of a substance to be hammered thin or drawn out into a wire |
| Malleability | The ability of a substance to be hammered or beaten into a sheet |
| Volume | A measure of the size of a body or region in three-demensional space |
| Compressibility | The measure of how much a given volume matter decreases when placed under pressure |
| Density | Density is the ratio of mass to volume or mass divided by volume |
| Evaporation | The change of a substance from liquid to a gas |
| Sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas (the term is sometimes also used for the reverse process) |
| Vaporization | The process by which a liquid or solid changes to a gas |
| Element | An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler stable substances and is made of one type of atom |
| Compound | A compound is a substance that can be broken down into simple stable substances Each Compound is made from the atoms of two or more elements that are chemically bonded |
| Heterogeneous Mixture | Mixtures that are not uniform throughout are said to be heterogeneous |
| Homogeneous Mixture | Mixtures that are uniform in composition are said to be homogeneous |
| Atom | An Atom is the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical identity of that element |
