Unit 1: Matter

| matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| physical property | a characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change , such as density , color , or hardness |
| chemical property | a property of matter that describes a substance abiltiy to participate in chemical reaction |
| physical changes | A change in a substance that does NOT involve a change in the identity of the substance ( in state of matter)solid -> liquid -> gas |
| chemical changes | A change in which one or more substances are converted into different substances ( chemical RXN) |
| extensive property | a property that depends on the extent or size of a system |
| intensive property | a property that does not depend on the amount of matter present such as pressure , tempeture or density |
| ductility | the ability of substance to be hammered thin or drawned out into a wire |
| malleability | the ability to be hammered or beaten into a sheet |
| volume | a measur5e of the size of a body or region or region in three dimensional spaces |
| compressiblity | the measure of how much a given volume of matter decreases when placed under pressure |
| density | the ratio of mass of a substance to the volume of a substance |
| evaporation | the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas |
| sublimation | the change of a substance from solid to gas |
| vaporization | the change of a substance from liquid or solid turns to gas |
| element | a substance that cannot be seperated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means |
| compound | a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
| heterogeneous mixture | composed into dissimilar components |
| homogeneous mixture | describes something that has a uniform structure or compisition throughout |
| atom | the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of the element . |
