unit 1: Matter

Matter defined as anything that has mass and take up space
physical property is a characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance
chemical property relates to a substances ability to undergo changes that transform it into different substances
extensive property depends on the amount of matter that is present
intensive property does not depend on the amount of matter present
ductility the ability of a substance to be hammered thin or drawn out into a wire
malleability the ability of a substance to he hammered or beaten into sheet
volume a measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space
compressibility the measure of how much a given volume of matter decreases when place under pressure
density the ration of the mass of a substance, often expressed as grams per cubic centimeter
evaporation the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas
sublimation the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas
vaporization the process in which a liquid or solid changes to a gas
element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down, it is made up of one type of atom
compound its a substance that be broken down into simple stable substances
heterogeneous mixture mixtures that are not in uniform
homogeneous mixture they are called solutions, and there mixtures that re uniform in composition
atom is the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical identity of the element
Physical change a change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance (state of matter)
chemical change A change in which one or more substances are converted into different substances
