| physical property | is a characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance |
| chemical property | relates to a substances ability to undergo changes that transform it into different substances |
| extensive property | depends on the amount of matter that is present |
| intensive property | does not depend on the amount of matter present |
| ductility | the ability of a substance to be hammered thin or drawn out into a wire |
| malleability | the ability of a substance to he hammered or beaten into sheet |
| volume | a measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space |

| density | the ration of the mass of a substance, often expressed as grams per cubic centimeter |
| evaporation | the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas |
| sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas |
| vaporization | the process in which a liquid or solid changes to a gas |
| element | is a pure substance that cannot be broken down, it is made up of one type of atom |
| compound | its a substance that be broken down into simple stable substances |
| heterogeneous mixture | mixtures that are not in uniform |
| homogeneous mixture | they are called solutions, and there mixtures that re uniform in composition |
| atom | is the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical identity of the element |
| Physical change | a change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance (state of matter) |
| chemical change | A change in which one or more substances are converted into different substances |
