| Matter | anything that has mass or takes up space. |
| Physical property | a characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density, color, or hardness. |
| Chemical property | a property of matter that describes a substances ability to participate in chemical reactions. |
| Extensive property | a property that depends on the extent or size of a system. |
| Intensive property | a property that does not depend on the amount of matter present, such as pressure, temperature, or density. |
| Ductility | the ability of a substance to be hammered thin or drawn out into a wire. |
| Malleability | the ability of a substance to be hammered or beaten into a sheet. |
| Volume | a measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space. |
| Compressibility | The measure of how much a given volume of matter decreases when placed under pressure. |
| Density | the ratio of mass of a substance to the volume of a substance. |
| Evaporation | the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas. |
| Sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directly into gas. |
| Vaporization | the process by which a liquid or solid changes to a gas. |
| Element | a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. |
| Compound | a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds. |
| Heterogeneous mixture | composed of dissimilar components. |
| Homogeneous mixture | describes something that has a uniform structure or composition throughout. |
| Atom | the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of the element. |
| Chemical change | A change in which one or more substances are converted into different substances. |
| Physical change | A change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance. |
