| maize | Another name for corn. |
| encomienda system | The King of Spain gave grants of land and natives to individual Spaniards and led to a system of dominance and exploration. |
| asiento system | A system which required the Spanish to pay a tax to their king on each slave they imported to the Americas. This allowed the Spanish to import cheap labor. |
| Columbian Exchange | The Transatlantic exchange of plant, animal, and diseases between the natives of America and the Europeans, end the age-old separation of hemispheres. |
| Bartolome de Las Casas | Was a Spanish priest that advocated for better treatment of the Indians. He established the basic arguments on behalf of justice for the Indians. |
