| transcription | The process whereby mRNA (messenger RNA) is made as a copy of part of a DNA strand |
| carbohydrates | Compounds of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. We normally think of them as sugars and starches. |
| translation | The process whereby the code in the mRNA is translated into the amino acid sequence in synthesizing protein molecules. |
| disaccharides | These are combinations of 2 monosaccharides. A common example is sucrose, which we put on food. |
| polysaccharides | These are combinations of many monosaccharides. Common examples are starch and cellulose. |
| monosaccharides | 6 carbon carbohydrate molecules. Common examples are glucose, fructose and galactose. |
| lipid | These are non-polar fat molecules usually derived from cholesterol |
