TermDefinition
halogens Elements in Group 17 (7A) of the periodic table. They tend to gain 1 electron
spin A property of electrons in which electrons of opposite spin combine in a single orbital
metalloid Elements along the jagged edge of the periodic table with properties between those of metals and non-metals. They are also called semiconductors and used in solid state digital electronics.
transition metals These are metals in Groups 3-12 of the periodic table. They represent the filling of the d orbitals and do not follow the Octet Rule.
alkali metals Metals in Group 1 of the periodic table,. They have `1 electron in their highest energy s orbital. They include Na (sodium) and K (potassium)
salt The combination of a metal ion and a non-metal ion usually formed when an acid reacts with a base
ferromagnetic a property of atoms where they behave as tiny magnets like iron atoms
semiconductors Elements along the jagged edge of the periodic table with properties between those of metals and non-metals. They are also called metalloids and used in solid state digital electronics.
cation a positively charged ion such as Na+
alkaline earth metals Metals in Group 2 of the periodic table. They have 2 electrons in their highest energy s orbital. They include Ca (calcium) and Mg (magnesium)
noble gases Elements with their p orbitals filled so they do not gain nor lose electrons. They are very non-reactive.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
