| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| protons | particles of an atom that are within the nucleus of an atom and have a charge of plus one and mass of 1 atomic mass unit |
| electrons | particles of an atom that are outside of the nucleus of an atom and have a charge of minus one and negligible mass |
| periodic table of the elements | a visual representation of the chemical elements, ordered by atomic number, electron configuration, and chemical properties |
| atomic mass unit (amu) | the mass of a proton or a neutron |
| neutrons | particles of an atom that are within the nucleus of an atom and have a zero charge and mass of 1 atomic mass unit |
| element | the identity of an atom such as hydrogen carbon, or iron |
| ion | an atom or molecule that has a + or - charge |
| deuterium | a hydrogen atom with 1 proton and 1 neutron |
| isotopes | atoms that have the same number of protons (same elements) but different numbers of neutrons (different masses) |
| atomic number | number of protons in an atom that establishes the identity of an element |
| molecular mass | the mass of a mole of particular molecules (such as the mass of a mole of water molecules is 18 grams/mole) |
| tritium | Hydrogen atom with 1 proton and 2 neutrons with an atomic mass of 3 amu |
| molar solution | contains 1 mole of solute in 1 liter of the solution |
