| Term | Definition |

| Primary data | Is data collected by an individual or organisation for their own use |
| Secondary data | this is already available or has been collected by somebody else for a different purpose |
| Ordinal categorical data | Can be ordered in some way |
| Nominal categorical data | Cannot be ordered |
| The population | is the entire group that is being studied |
| A sample | is a group that is selected from the population |
| A questionnaire | is a set of questions designed to obtain data from the population |
| A stem and leaf plot | represents numerical data by seperating each piece of data into two parts: the stem and the leaf |
| The mode | a set values is the value that occurs most often |
| The median | of a data set is the middle value after the data has been ranked |
| An outlier | is an observation that lies an abnormal distance from other values in a data set |
