Rhetorical Content

TermDefinition
Rhetoric Using language to create meaning.
Rhetorical Situation The circumstances out of which the argument emerges. It is made up of the context, exigence, speaker, audience, subject, and purpose.
Context The general time, place, and occasion within which the rhetorical situation is generated.
Exigence The events that prompt a speaker to make a claim.
Speaker The entity making a claim.
Audience The individual(s) the speaker is directly trying to reach.
Subject The topic of the speech or discourse.
Purpose What the audience is supposed to understand and do after experiencing this discourse.
