| Rhetoric | Using language to create meaning. |
| Rhetorical Situation | The circumstances out of which the argument emerges. It is made up of the context, exigence, speaker, audience, subject, and purpose. |
| Context | The general time, place, and occasion within which the rhetorical situation is generated. |
| Exigence | The events that prompt a speaker to make a claim. |
| Speaker | The entity making a claim. |
| Audience | The individual(s) the speaker is directly trying to reach. |
| Subject | The topic of the speech or discourse. |
| Purpose | What the audience is supposed to understand and do after experiencing this discourse. |
