| Figurative Language | Words used in an imaginative way to express ideas that are not literally true. |
| Literal Language | Words that mean exactly what they say, they mean precisely what they say. |
| Simile | A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things using like or as. |
| Metaphor | A comparison of two unlike things that have similar qualities. |
| Personification | Giving human qualities to nonhuman things. |
| Hyperbole | Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. |
| Alliteration | A repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words. |
| Onomatopoeia | Words whose sound echoes their meaning, (sound effects). |
| Verbal Irony | When words express something contrary to truth or someone says the opposite of what they really feel or mean. |
| Symbol | A person, place or object that represents something beyond itself. |
