| fiction | literature that deals with made up people, places, things, and events |
| climax | the highest or most intense point in the development of a story |
| imagery | language that appeals to the five senses that helps the reader developed imagined pictures |
| mood | the overall feeling a work of literature evokes for the reader |
| tone | the writer’s attitude toward his/her subject matter |
| protagonist | the character in literature who the reader roots for or sympathizes with |
| antagonist | the character or force who blocks the protagonist |
| setting | time and place a story occurs |
| theme | the lesson or insight about life offered in a story |
| author's purpose | reason or intent for writing |
| plot | the sequence of events in a story |
| conflict | a struggle between two opposing forces |
| resolution | the end of the story. It occurs after the climax when the conflict is resolved. |
| exposition | writing that introduces the main characters and conflict of a story |
