Essay Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Prompt Claim | The writer's position on the prompt question. |
| Conclusion | This is the last paragraph in the essay. It sums up the ideas of an essay and leaves the reader with a strong final impression. It contains the restated thesis, summary of body paragraphs, and closing statement. |
| Elaboration | The process of developing an idea by providing specific supporting details that enhance one's writing. |
| Evidence | This is the middle of each body paragraph. It should be at least three sentences in length. It is the specific references, quotations, facts, examples, and opinions to support a claim. |
| Introduction | This is the first paragraph of the essay. It contains the hook and the thesis statement. It's job is to introduce the prompt to the audience. |
| Body Paragraph | This is made up of sentences that work together to develop an idea or accomplish a purpose. It contains a topic sentence, evidence, and explanation sentence. |
| Persuasive Essay | The author attempts to convince the readers to adopt a certain viewpoint or to take a particular stand. |
| Transition | Words or phrases that show connections between details. These words and phrases are used to show how a writer's ideas relate to one another. |
| Word Choice (Diction) | Uses words with positive or negative connotations (feelings) to stir people's emotions. |
| Hook | The first few sentences in an introductory paragraph that are designed to grab the reader's attention. This should be at least three sentences long. |
| Explanation Sentence | The final sentence of each body paragraph. Its purpose is to explain to the audience how the evidence proves the statement made in the topic sentence is correct. It contains a transition word + opinion + prompt claim + explanation. |
| Restated Thesis Statement | The first sentence in the concluding paragraph. Its purpose is to reaffirm the author's opinion regarding the prompt question. This is the only prompt claim. |
| Closing Statement | This is the last sentence in a concluding paragraph. Its purpose is to add one final statement regarding the prompt that wraps up the essay. This is NOT repeating the thesis statement again. |
